A fantastic organization, Tara’s mission statement encompasses its genuine understanding of fair trade issues and a heartfelt commitment to empower disadvantaged people
“Poverty is not only about shortage of money. It is about rights and relationships; about how people are treated and how they regard themselves; about powerlessness, exclusion and loss of dignity. Yet the lack of an adequate income is at its heart……..”
Tara defends the rights of the poor, employing only adults, offering them advance payments so they can buy materials, and offering them the security of long term contracts.
TARA’s SOCIAL PROJECTS
Child labour
Organises protest marches and media campaigns to raise public awareness. Rescuing children from the exploitation of child labour practices and empowering them through education.
Education
Non formal schools for child labourers and children from impoverished families, attended by over 1100 children and adult education centres, with a special focus on women.
Health
Tara conducts health campaigns to promote awareness of issues such as asthma, TB, general infections and eye care. The health education initiatives are supported by distributing nutritional supplements and medicines and where possible, providing people with health insurance.
Critically, in a country where HIV is affecting alarming numbers of India’s population, Tara’s HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns have reached over 7000 people.
Environment
Spearheading initiatives for clean drinking water, Tara actively promotes rainwater harvesting, water conservation and management.
Tara is a registered member of WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation) and FTF India (Fair Trade Forum India)
After searching India for months to find a fair-trade organization to work with, we are delighted to have formed a trading relationship with Tara (Trade Alternative Reform Action) and hope to see it grow and strengthen in the upcoming years. As a further commitment to Kiri’s fair-trade roots, we will be donating ten percent of our profits to community projects in and around the Delhi area.
